How to Help: Get Involved

Four Easy Ways to Support
Lilac Services for the Blind:

  1. Donate toward the Nancy Domanico Endowment Fund
In loving memory of our former director Nancy B. Domanico, we have created an in endowment fund. Many lives were touched through her generosity and service during her lifetime. Contributing to the Nancy Domanico Endowment Fund is a long-term investment in maintaining the high quality of services available to the blind and people dealing with vision loss in the Inland Northwest. You, too, can leave an enduring, uplifting impression! Simply donate directly to our PayPal, found in the top right corner of this website. 100% of the donations contributed in this way directly go to Lilac Blind.

  2. Donate toward the Lilac Services for the Blind Endowment Fund with Innovia
The Board of Trustees of the Lilac Blind Foundation created this endowment in 1982 to provide a permanent source of revenue for its charitable services to the blind citizens of the Inland Northwest. Additional bequests from Patricia Wolsborn received in 1993 and 1994 greatly increased the assets of this fund. To donate to this Endowment Fund, follow the link provided here.

  3. Planned Giving
There are many ways to remember Lilac Services for the Blind in your will. Please consult your estate planner, financial consultant, or attorney about the option that best meets your needs. The following information gives the very basic ways to leave assets to Lilac via your will. However, we highly recommend that you consult your financial advisor or estate planner in order to avoid unnecessary taxes, and make the best use of your assets.

  4. Types of Gifts
Any kind of property such as securities, bonds, stocks, land leases, royalties, patents, contracts, bank accounts, and/or life insurance may be used. All are considered tax deductible by the United States Internal Revenue Service since they are used to further the charitable purposes of Lilac Services for the Blind.

Inquire about your employer’s community involvement!

Does your employer or association contribute to community services? There is no time like the present to inquire deeper into your employer or association’s community involvement. Most local businesses and corporations give through the United Way, provide sponsorships, or provide local matching grants. Also, many prefer to support their employees and members in the process. By mentioning or recommending Lilac Services For The Blind as a reputable place to contribute, you may be able to initiate a new source of support for the training of the blind and visually impaired people of your community. Workplace conversations can be the easiest ways to give Lilac publicity. We believe that your opinion does matter. Please inquire into your employer and association’s community involvement policy.

Current Renovation Projects

Renovation Projects

Lilac Services for the Blind has both major and minor renovation projects for which we are seeking funding and volunteers

Current Renovation Projects and Upgrades:

  • New computers for staff, library, Braille room, and Assistive Technology Laboratories

  • Exterior and interior security systems

  • New carpeting and flooring

Technology Modernization Project

Our current computers from 2008 and older are outdated and struggle to run necessary updated software like Windows 10 and Microsoft office. These computers, built from leftover HP pieces, are especially strained when our visually impaired staff and clients must use accessibility software such as JAWS, ZoomText, and COBRA. Clients and staff must often sit with more patience than should be necessary to do even the simplest of tasks. So, after 10 years of the Technology Manager, Russell Smith, “putting Band-Aids on these old boxes,” Lilac Blind would like to retire these computers and purchase new ones that are much easier to use.

This upgrade will increase our efficiency and  ability   to   continue  our   mission   of

PXL_20210907_155214801.jpg

enabling the freedom and independence of our blind and visually impaired clients. It will especially make it easier on our blind and visually impaired staff, whose current computers are even more slow and unresponsive than others due to their accessibility software. Our Assistive Technology Laboratories will also be upgraded with these new computers, allowing our clients to explore accessibility programs more easily, enhance their computer abilities, and increase their levels of independence at home and in work and school environments.

Lilac Blind has a total of 18 computers in need of replacing: 9 office computers, 2 library computers, 2 Braille library computers, and 2 laboratory computers in the Spokane, WA office; and 1 office computer and 2 lab computers in the Wenatchee, WA office. We anticipate the total expense to purchase all of these new computers will amount to $15,686. Hopefully with the combined efforts of fundraising and applying for aid through grants, we will be able to reach this goal by spring of 2022.

Past Project Contributions

Good Buddies Cabinets donated new cabinets and a new dishwasher in November 2012 to update our kitchen and make it more effective for teaching clients. Lilac Blind has completed the following projects in the past several years: Updated all building lighting to energy-efficient, full-spectrum lighting with grants from Avista, Vandervert Construction, and Haskins Steel Co. We weatherized and painted the building exterior with both grants and labor from Numerica and FLSmidth RAHCO. FASTSigns donated and installed exterior signage. FLSmidth RAHCO paid for and built a retaining wall, which was then planted by the KXLY Extreme Team and Ritter’s Garden & Gifts. DeLeon Foods donated two large flower pots for our entrance. Every year Whitworth University students spend a day painting, cleaning, and performing other activities at our offices. We deeply appreciate the Department of Corrections crews coming out to shovel the snow out of our Paratransit drop-off area. All these community-minded groups have made an wonderful impact on Lilac Blind’s capability and capacity to serve those with vision loss.
